Kampar Karhutla Watch Enters a New Development Phase under the 2026 UNRI DIPA Research Program

Kampar Karhutla Watch has entered a new development phase through a research project funded by the 2026 Universitas Riau DIPA Research Product and Prototype Scheme.

The research is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rahmad Kurniawan, ST., MIT. from the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Riau (KJFD: Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery), in partnership with the Regional Disaster Management Agency of Kampar Regency, or BPBD Kampar.

Kampar Karhutla Watch grew from a series of studies on hotspots, weather conditions, remote sensing, and early warning systems for forest and land fires. Between 2023 and 2025, the research was developed into a prototype integrating hotspot data, weather conditions, air quality, administrative boundaries, peatland information, and spatial analysis to identify areas requiring priority attention.

Through the 2026 UNRI DIPA funding, the research aims to advance the prototype from Technology Readiness Level 5 to Level 6. The development includes improved risk analysis, limited-scale integration of IoT-based microclimate data, peatland information, estimated timing of nearby rainfall, dashboard enhancement, and system testing with BPBD Kampar.

The partnership is supported by an official agreement between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Riau, and BPBD Kampar. The collaboration covers disaster-related research, data and information exchange, education, and human resource capacity development.

Kampar Karhutla Watch is expected to progress beyond an academic prototype and become a practical system that supports monitoring, strengthens preparedness, and assists decision-making for forest and land fire mitigation in Kampar Regency.
